About this Paddle (Description)

Situated on a high bluff overlooking Bayou Bartholomew, Chemin-A-Haut State Park is a natural paradise. The 500-acre site takes its name from the French word meaning "high road," the route used by Native Americans centuries ago in their seasonal migrations. You can rent a canoe on the grounds and plop it into Bayou Bartholomew for an interesting, winding excursion through the aquatic vegetation and past wooded banks. Cabins are available for overnights. Younger patrons will enjoy the playgrounds and wading pool in the swimming complex. The picnic area includes 35 family sites with grills and tables. Big Slough Lake, located near the edge of the park, offers more paddling opportunities, along with fishing from the shore. Chemin-A-Haut is located at 14656 State Park Road, Bastrop. From Monroe, take either U.S. 165 or Highway 139 north to Bastrop. From Bastrop, take U.S. 425 north to Highway 1257 (Loop Park Road).
